T/Sargent William V. Baldwin received the Distinguished Flying Cross , five times , as he had 4 oak leaf clusters , which signified 4 more Distinguished Flying Cross awards. As the engineer on a B 24 bomber he was responsible for keeping the plane intact enough to land safely in England. One of his awards was from a volunteer mission deep into Germany to a well defended target. Twelve planes went out and 3 came home. He said he was literally sucking gas out of the engines that had died and putting it in one of the two left. They knew when they left there would not be enough gas to get home. They landed in the first field they came to owner English territory. He was an excellent father and Uncle, and grand parent.

Hello Baldwin Girls, I'm writing to express my condolences to you for the loss of your Dad. He was always a kind uncle to me and seemed to be an outstanding father to you. Although I always admired him, I must say that my admiration grew during my years in the USAF. I learned much about the WWII European bombing campaigns. Your Dad had much courage to survive his missions during WWII. The odds of his survival were less than 40 percent. I'm sure he did his job well and perhaps he even had some good luck. Whatever the reason, our country owes much to your father and his fellow crew members. You should be proud not only of his work as a father but also of his service to our nation. Dear Baldwin Family: We remember those days when Eleanor and I lived in Fairlington and Bill and I would go to Highs and get ice cream and have a Sunday gathering with the kids. I also remember when we both purchased brand new cars in 1964, I purchased a Mustang (a 1964 1/2) (white inside and outside) and Bill purchased an Edsel. We both thought we had out done each other. I know you all are gone to miss him as Eleanor and I will always remember him as a good father and family man. We also remember those great boat trips on the Potomac River doing those lazy Sunday afternoons and nights, those were the days. GOD bless him and your family. We all have lost a good FRIEND With great sympathy: William and Eleanor Roane

As one of the nieces who made a weekly visit during the summer I will always remember Uncle Bill as someone who tolerated the tumble, yelling, doors slamming, and running up and down steps of at least 6 girls in the house. I guess the perils of flying over Germany prepared him for a house full of girls! Thank you, Uncle Bill, for trips to DC, boating on the river, and taking us to see the fireworks. Thank you for allowing me to drive your "Cougar" when Ginny was not allowed to (go figure).

Bill was a big brother, to me as well as a friend! When he and Dot were married I played the piano for the wedding. I was in my early teens and I thought they were the most beautiful and romantic couple I had ever seen. When I grew up and was getting married, Bill drove me to the church. He gave me advice all the way to the church. I loved Bill and will miss him.
