Obituary of Mary Lee Marcum

Mary Lee Hughes Marcum, resident of Prince George, Virginia, departed this life on earth on February 28, 2013. She was born on January 26, 1930, in Kinston, North Carolina, one of six children to the late Milton and Berta A. Hughes. Mary Lee was preceded in death by her husband and soul mate Ford C. Marcum, Sr., two sisters Carolyn Hendrickson and Janice Rodenbach, and one brother Seth Hughes. Mrs. Marcum is survived by one sister Jean Chase of Madison, Indiana, one brother Glen Hughes of LaGrange, North Carolina, and two step children Linda Babcock and Ford C. Marcum, Jr., several loving nieces and nephews, and devoted friends. Mary Lee was a long time member of First Christian Church of Hopewell, as well as an active member of several clubs and organizations: Charter member of Southside Va. American Needlepoint Guild (SVC-ANG), Life member of Va. Guild of Needlewoman (VGN) and Life Time Member of Good Sam RV Club (Va. Roadrunners Chapter), a member of Family Motor Coach (FMCA) – Coastal Tar Heels Chapter and Colonial Virginians Chapter. She was a former member of Va. Chapter 99S (International Organization of Women Pilots), but due to health issues she had to relinquish her private airplane pilot licenses, which was her first love. She was an avid camper, pulling her camper from one camp site to another, making new friends along the way. She was also an enthusiastic and passionate race car fan, where she remained devoted to the memory of Dale Earnhardt, Sr. She was retired from Ft. Lee in 1988 as a Budget Analyst and Chapter Member of Southern Bell- Red Hats. Mary Lee will be remembered for her dry sense of humor, independence, desire to laugh and have fun, and her daredevil spirit. The family will receive friends at the Memorial Funeral Home-Gould Chapel, 214 N. 6th Avenue, Hopewell, VA from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm Tuesday, March 5, 2013 and where funeral services will be conducted 2:00 pm Wednesday, March 6, 2013 with Pastor Bobby Lane and Rev. Joyce Harville officiating. Interment will follow in Southlawn Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, 203 N. 11th Avenue, Hopewell, VA 23860.
