Beverley Keener Doeg

Obituary of Beverley Belle Keener Doeg

Beverly was born in 1918, the first of eight children of William Thomas and Frances Robinson Keener. She enjoyed life to the very fullest until her death on April 27, 2015. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Frederic Doeg, her parents, and a sister, Betty, who died at 6 months of age. Beverly is survived by her three children – Allison (Joseph) Saunders of Chester, Susan (Allan) Sordelett of Richmond, and Bill (Sallie Ford) Doeg of Germantown, TN; her five grandsons – Scott Blanks of Chester, Dan (Allison) Blanks of Jacksonville, FL, Jim (Michelle) Blanks of Colonial Heights, Thomas Doeg and John Doeg of Germantown, TN; her five great-grandchildren - Devin, Jack, Kate, Lauren, and Mitch; her brothers and sisters – William T. "Buddy" Keener (Hilda Thore), Kenneth Keener, and Wallace (Jewel) Keener of Hopewell; John (Vanda) Keener of Albuquerque, NM; Carol (Jim) Birkett of Glen Allen, VA; and Elsie (Pete) Kanak of The Villages, FL; countless nieces and nephews; and her dear friend of 13 years, Randy Mixon of The Villages, FL. Beverly was born and raised in Hopewell. She retired from Honeywell (Allied Chemical) after 28 years in the accounting department. She found her love of books early in life and volunteered in the Hopewell Library helping to repair books for Maude Langhorn Nelson. She read every day. Her faith was grounded deeply with Christian values she was taught as a member of West End Presbyterian Church under the teaching of the Rev. Bill Hill. Through the years she taught Sunday School classes, led the Women of the Church for a time, and opened her home to the West End's singles group. After retirement, she again opened up her home for a weekly women's Bible study that was led by her friend, Ramona Cameron. Her desire to "give back" continued after her husband, Fred, passed away in 1994. She immediately took instruction and became a volunteer for Central VA Hospice. She would go to homes and sit with a homebound person allowing the caregiver to get out of the house for some down time. She appreciated so much all the help she got during the five years she had taken care of Fred, she really wanted to pass the help on to others. She loved going to new and exciting places and had traveled to Scotland, and London twice. Her latest trip to London was with her daughters in 2005 to celebrate her 87th birthday. Bev once turned her back on a robber holding a gun. When asked for her pocketbook, she walked away saying, "NO, I've worked hard for my money." The police fussed at her for doing that, but that incident earned her the joking title of "mean little mama" from family members. Anyone who knew Bev would say that she was open and friendly. She never met a stranger, and always had a smile on her face. She was weekly calling her friends and family to check in and make sure everything was alright. Her family came first and she showered them with love and care. She was constantly telling her kids she loved them and how proud she was of them. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 29 at Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Hopewell from 6:00-8:00 PM. Her funeral service will be held at West End Presbyterian Church in Hopewell on Thursday, April 30 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Merchant's Hope Memorial Cemetery in Prince George, VA. Those wishing to honor Bev are encouraged, in lieu of flowers, to make a donation to West End Presbyterian Church, 1600 Atlantic Street, Hopewell, VA.
