Obituary of Gerald Stanley Stokes

Gerald Stanley Stokes, died suddenly on October 16, 2014. He was born in Hopewell, Virginia on August 26, 1937 to Walter Lee Stokes and Judith Faw Stokes and is survived by his devoted wife of 34 years, Linda Joyce Stokes; children, Tonya, Jeffrey, and Rhonda; stepdaughter, Kathy; grandchildren, Lisa, Tamara, Brooke, Daniel, Breanne and Harley; six great grandchildren and brothers, Donald and Douglas and their wives, Cindy and Linda, respectively. He was elected to 9 consecutive 4-year terms as Treasurer of the City of Hopewell, Virginia and also served the City as a City Councilman, a deputy sheriff and Harbor Master. He served in the Virginia National Guard, Army & Navy Reserves and was a Lt. Colonel in the Virginia Defense Force, serving as Battalion Commander. Among his many other endeavors, he was a member of Dupont Lodge #289, 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, ACCA Temple Shriner, life member of the Hopewell Shrine Club, Loyal Order of the Moose, Treasurer's Association of Virginia, Sons of Confederate Veterans, the National Rifle Association, Historic Hopewell Foundation, Inc. and the Civil War Preservation Trust. He was a past Treasurer of the Hopewell Democratic Committee, board member of Lions Club International, Southside Mental Health Association, American Red Cross, President of the United Givers Fund, District Chairman of the Boy Scouts of America, past chairman of the Virginia Human Resources Advisory Board and on the Board of Directors of the Synthetic Federal Credit Union. A Masonic Rites service and visitation will be held on October 21 at 6:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Hopewell. Internment private.
