Diane Smith Ward

d. March 30, 2017

Diane Smith Ward, 77, of Charles City, VA, formerly of Hopewell, VA, passed away on March 30, 2017. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Dale Ward (Dickie) and her sister, Joyce Smith Cobb. Diane was born in Hopewell, Virginia on June 6, 1939 to Violet Milliken Smith and Eugene Enoch Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. C. Sharone Ward and her husband, Dr. Samuel Galstan, and their sons (her much beloved grandsons!) Bailey Kirkland Ward Galstan and Berkeley Dale Ward Galstan. Diane retired from Defense General Supply Center Richmond as a Supervisor in Supply. After her retirement, and up until the last month of her life, she brought joy to so many people through volunteering three days a week at John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell, VA and at Galstan & Ward Family Dentistry in Chester, VA. Diane loved reading and sharing books with her daughter and then passing them on to friends. She was the most giving and sweetest person, always had time for her family and friends, was always cheerful, and loved the beautiful views of the water at her homes in Charles City, Wake and Deltaville, VA. She had a green thumb and was an awesome cook, known especially for her crab cakes, fried softshell crabs, Williamsburg bread, and countless other desserts. The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at Memorial Funeral Home Gould Chapel 214 N. 6th Ave. Hopewell, VA, where the funeral service will be held on Monday, April 3, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. (her and Dickie's anniversary), with a celebration of a life well lived to follow at the home of Sam and Sharone. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider making a donation to John Randolph Medical Center Auxiliary or the Charles City County Volunteer Fire Department, Attn: EMS 7100 Adkins Road, Charles City, VA 23030.
